Society and Environment has a comprehensive common Middle School syllabus divided into four areas of study: Economics, Geography, History and Politics and Law. These subjects prepare students both for their interaction with the world and society after school and they prepare them for the subjects we offer students in Senior School. Within each subject are Common Assessment Tasks which allow teachers to measure student achievement effectively with all other students, ensuring an ability to evaluate teaching programmes and teaching pedagogy. The content taught is based on the following:
|
Subject |
Year 8 |
Year 9 |
Year 10 |
|
Economics |
Economy and society |
Economic systems |
Macro economics |
|
Geography |
World geography |
Australian landscapes |
Environmental issues |
|
History |
Western Australian history |
Australian history |
Australia in the international community |
|
Politics and Law |
Democracy and the citizen |
Australia’s political and legal system |
Australia’s government |
Mandated literacy, numeracy, mapping and career skills are also included in each subject, allowing students to develop these life long skills in class, each term over three years. The ambition of the Middle School syllabus is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the basics of each course offered in Senior School Society and Environment classes, before they reach Senior School.
Intrastate, Interstate and International Tours
Society and Environment aims to expand students' understanding of the subjects we study through intra-state, interstate and international tours. W.A. tours to country towns, beaches, Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Centre, the Maritime Museum and Fremantle Gaol support the various Middle and Senior School subjects we offer. In 2006, Senior School students attended a seven day tour of Canberra and Sydney as part of the History and Political and Legal Studies courses. In 2007, Senior School Economics, History and Political and Legal Studies students toured Canberra, Ballarat and Melbourne. In 2008 the learning area took students of History and Political and Legal Studies to France and Belgium to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the ending of World War One. Planning is now underway for a Senior School educational tour of the Gold Coast and Canberra in April 2009.
