What are the Year 8 Learning Teams?
The Year 8 Learning Teams at KSHS consist of a team of 4 specialist learning area teachers (English, Maths, Science and Society & Environment) who teach the same 3 classes of Year 8 students, and who meet regularly to discuss and plan to address individual, small group and whole year educational needs. The curriculum they deliver is aligned to enable students to understand links between individual subjects and recognise the importance of each specialist curriculum area.
Who are the teachers involved with the program?
For 2009 the following staff are directly involved with the program:
English Mr Sijka and Mrs Sturmer

Why focus on Year 8?

The transition to high school is an important time in everyone's life. We all remember what it was like in our first year of high school - the stress, the excitement, the adjustment to a new outlook on life! Our focus in Year 8 is that for students and their families, this change is a significant one that required a special effort by schools to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible in a supportive and stable environment. KSHS offers this program to provide all this and more.
What is special about Year 8 at Kalamunda SHS?

Our school has a number of specialist programs on offer - these include the Department of Education official Gifted and Talented Education - Visual Arts Program, our well respected Academic Excellence Program and the fully accredited Outdoor Adventure Program.
In addition, the Year 8 Learning Teams are well developed. These are designed to address the academic and social needs of our new students. Teams of teachers meet on a weekly basis to plan and implement strategies that address the needs of all the Year 8 students including those who have specific needs such as low literacy and numeracy skills, along with those who are gifted and talented.
Events such as the Orientation Camp, Antibullying programs, the Bibbulmun Challenge, regular visiting performers (such as Bully Busters Two) and excursions (such as visits to the Hills Forest Discovery Centre) and social events including Discos, Movie Nights and River Rocks planned by the Year 8 Student Council, add spice to the experience of Year 8 students at our school.
