Welcome to the Language Department
Learning a Language Other Than English (LOTE):
· Helps students understand and value their own culture and the cultures of other people
· Is important in order to produce a highly skilled multilingual workforce in response to a rapidly changing global marketplace
· Enables students to be competitive when searching for jobs in law, medicine, trade, finance, politics, science, the arts, tourism, hospitality and education.
· Can enhance literacy in a student’s first language and build useful cognitive and social skills that are beneficial in all areas of school and later life.
At Kalamunda Senior High School the studying of a Language Other Than English (LOTE) is compulsory for years 8 and 9. It is then an elective subject for years 10, 11 and 12.We are fortunate to have 3 languages offered in our school, namely Japanese, Italian and Indonesian. These courses are delivered by enthusiastic and experienced staff.

Language classes are a source of variety and fun as students explore the culture of the country as well as the language which is being studied.




In Year 10 students study the Certificate II in Applied Language from Central Metropolitan TAFE. This course is relevant and meaningful and prepares students for coping in the country of the language.
JAPANESE EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Kalamunda Senior High School has longstanding sister school relationships with Kobe Gakuin University High School and with the Yabu shire, in the Hyogo prefecture in Japan. Each year students from one of these areas visit our school for a 2 week cultural exchange program in July. Families of students studying Japanese, have the opportunity to host these students.
