ENGLISH
The aim of the English Faculty at Kalamunda Senior High School is to provide an innovative and dynamic environment in which students of all abilities and interests can express themselves clearly and rationally. The Faculty is committed to enabling all students to reach their potential as critical and creative thinkers, thereby giving them the skills and strategies to engage with the complexities of society and culture.
As critical and creative thinkers, the Faculty provides students with ample opportunities to learn and practice the essential functional and critical literacy skills needed to cope with the challenges of the modern world.
In order to meet this aim, the Faculty is committed to providing a supportive environment to students of all abilities. It encourages both collaborative and independent thinking and learning. This reflects the team ethos that the staff of the Faculty embody.
UPPER SCHOOL
The Upper School curriculum focuses on the New Courses of Study that have been effectively implemented across the English area. Students are exposed to a modern and dynamic curriculum that focuses on academic achievement and personal development of the individual student. Courses offered in Year 11 and 12 are the latest and most recently updated from the Curriculum Council.
MIDDLE SCHOOL/LOWER SCHOOL
The Middle and Lower School courses reflect the dynamic changes in the English curriculum. Students are taught using the curriculum frameworks and in 2009 students will continue to develop their skills and understandings in the four English Outcomes: Listening and Speaking, Viewing, Reading and Writing. They will do this through the aspects of Understanding Language, Contextual Understanding (Attitudes, values and beliefs), Conventions and Processes and Strategies. Furthermore it is envisaged students will be given the opportunity to undertake units from the Course of Study in English in Year 11 and 12 commensurate with their levels of achievement.
The learning area outcomes in English are as follows:
UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGE – Students understand that the way language is used varies according to context.
ATTITUDES, VALUES AND BELIEFS – Students understand that language has an
important effect on the ways in which they view themselves and the world in which they live.

wide range of situations.
SPEAKING – Students speak with purpose and effect in a wide range of contexts.
VIEWING – Students view a wide range of visual texts with purpose, understanding and critical awareness.
READING – Students read a wide range of texts with purpose, understanding and critical awareness.
WRITING – Students write for a range of purposes and in a range of forms using
conventions appropriate to audience, purpose and context.

Vocational Pathway
Subject Outline
Units 1A and 1B are designed to suit the needs of students seeking further education at TAFE or employment at the end of Year 11 or Year 12. These units focus on the English language and its use in a variety of forms and contexts. Students will engage in activities connecting strongly to personal areas of interest, reflecting on personal transitions; increased social responsibility; pressures and expectations of work. In 1A and 1B English, students develop broad English skills.

Year 12 Literature is a course designed for students seeking university entrance at the end of Year 12. It demands advanced analytical skills. In Literature, students are required to engage in the detailed study of texts drawn from a range of literary genres including fiction, drama and poetry.
The course focuses on critical approaches based on the concept of genre, and also incorporates the study of specific critical and contextual issues. Through this, students develop critical understanding of texts, contexts and issues. They also refine their written and oral communication skills.
