The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Visual Art program places emphasis on the need to provide a holistic education through participation in the normal school program and provision of opportunities for these exceptional students to engage in additional, specialised activities in the visual arts. In addition to GATE Visual Art classes established for students during their week day timetable, students also experience a diversity of studio workshops, conducted by art specialists on Saturday mornings.

The Visual Arts course is not restricted to students who wish to pursue art careers, although many do, but provides a complete academic curriculum leading to choices for tertiary or TAFE studies.

Deadlines for application are strictly observed. Selection is conducted by the GATE branch of the Department of Education and Training and is through a series of tests and an interview. Please refer to the GATE website for further details.

Program and Curriculum Structure

All lower school GATE Visual Art students are timetabled for 2 hours of GATE Visual Art during the week. They are also encouraged to select other art options.

All upper school GATE Visual Art students are expected to be enrolled in a Visual Arts Course.

In addition to these week day timetabled classes, all GATE Visual Art students attend Saturday morning workshops from 9am to 12.30pm during term time.

Year 8 Program

Year 8 GATE Visual Art students complete a foundation course in their first year which is designed to prepare them for further specialisation and future Visual Arts projects. Students explore a variety of aspects of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional studies. Tutors guide them through the basic principles of drawing, painting, ceramics and printmaking. In term 4, year 8 students are able to “sign up” for the workshop of their choice.

Year 9, 10 & 11 Program

Visual Art students in Years 9, 10 and 11 are offered a variety of workshops to select from each term. The range of specialisation and the number of workshops is determined by the coordinator. Ideally, studio disciplines such as oil painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and printmaking are offered, as well as digital art mediums, such as digital photography, animation, and computer aided illustration. Workshops are comprised of small groups of students and a specialist tutor.

Year 12 Program

GATE Visual Art students in Year 12 are given the opportunity to work on their body of work (visual diaries) or their studio projects while receiving invaluable feedback and advice. Students are offered technical assistance and support relating to their chosen studio specialisation.

Year 12s are provided with opportunities to engage in sustained visual inquiry activities such as Life Drawing.

Note: Students wishing to remain in the GATE Visual Art Program in Year 11 and Year 12 are required to study an Upper School Visual Arts Course to retain their place in the program.
